Broadband bundle provider BT has announced plans to expand its efforts to train young people to help older friends and family to get online.

The company, which offers internet, home phone and digital TV deals, is building on its existing Internet Rangers scheme in the UK by joining forces with One Economy to boost digital inclusion in the US.

By donating £129,479 to the non-profit body, BT is hoping One Economy will be able to develop a platform which young people will be able to use to teach adults about the internet.

Michael Boustridge, president of BT Global Services Multi-National Corporations, said the scheme will boost the firm’s “social and economic sustainability”.

Last month, Jenny Pidgley of Southampton was named the overall UK winner of BT’s Internet Ranger of the Year scheme.

She runs free computer sessions at her school to teach older generations basic IT skills, including using the web.
