Telecentre-Europe brings 50 000 people online in a day
On 4 March 2010 Telecentre-Europe held the first ‘European Get Online Day‘ which proved extremely successful. More than 50 000 people were reached by the campaign on the day itself, in more than 25 European countries. This number topped 66 794 on the closing day of the European Commission’s eSkills Week 2010 (5 March 2010).
During the peak of the campaign on 4 March 2010, the counter at the Telecentre-Europe site was rising at the rate of about 3 600 an hour, attracting one person every second. The most active Telecentre networks were in Romania, Lithuania and Latvia. Telecentres are community venues where people can go to get help using computers and the internet.
Telecentre-Europe’s Get Online Day in 2010 was a pan-European initiative, which aimed to bring people online and targeted Europeans who have never used the Internet and were consequently not aware of its benefits. Telecentres across Europe held events helping people to learn about the Internet – for the first time for many of them. This project across the entire Europe showed the power of a joint and cross border network.
Updated and detailed participation demographic statistics will be made available by 8 March 2010 on the Telecentre-Europe website. All statistics are enabled by an online tracking system that has been developed especially for the events.
